My role

I led the UX research and design initiatives for Time and Pay solutions in Amazon A to Z, used by millions of Amazon employees, worldwide. I conducted qualitative and quantitative studies with customers and defined the product vision.

Design-wise, I created user journeys, wireframes, prototypes and monitored the post-launch analytics. I also managed the design alignment amongst cross-functional teams and established our roadmap priorities. At each creative phase, I presented my UI/UX findings and deliverables to senior leadership.

The challenge

Receiving one’s correct paycheck should be easy but for Amazon employees, the A to Z app overcomplicates this experience. Without accurate time, there is no accurate pay. And the app made it plenty difficult for employees to ensure time, attendance, and pay solutions.

LACK OF RESOURCES

Unfortunately for employees, there aren’t time and attendance tools that resolve issues. Instead, people have to call the ERC (Employee Resource Center), record a voicemail and hope that an associate resolves the problem before the pay cycle ends. This system is archaic and leaves extraordinary room for error, leading to inaccurate pay.

UNINTUITIVE DESIGN

From the scattered pieces of content to the inconsistent visual components, A to Z fails as a whole. The infrastructure makes it challenging for employees to access vital information, while the outdated UI overcomplicates, what should be, simple interactions.

CONVOLUTED COMMUNICATION

Communication between the company and its employees is nonexistent. The fragmented correspondence creates a non-holistic journey, emulating a frustrating and confusing experience for everyone involved. Employees are consistently left sitting in the dark wondering what’s become of their time, attendance and pay queries.

A fresh perspective

It was a unique experience to be in the demographic I’d be designing for (I did work at Amazon after all), but a single US corporate employee was such a small part of the picture. I conducted customer interviews with employees from all walks of life: different positions, levels, locations…etc. From an Ops Associate working in Japan to an accountant in the UK, it was clear that the A to Z app would need to serve a magnitude of time and pay solutions.

After the research phase, I took my learnings and began iterating and reiterating different concepts. Time and pay go hand in hand, so I developed logical flows that fed into one another. I also defined consistent visual components throughout the TAA (time and attendance) experience, cognisant of the fact this was a portion of the app and fit into the greater ecosystem. Throughout the UX and UI updates, I managed the cross-functioning between teams to deliver the best product for our customers.

Accurate time means accurate pay

SELF SERVICE

By empowering employees through the form of self-service features, an estimated 100 Amazonian working hours are saved every year. Employees have the capability to manage their time and pay appropriately, without having to depend on a third party.

FUNCTION + FORM

If the tech isn’t working, it doesn’t matter how pretty it looks, but that doesn’t mean function and form can’t coexist. With the combination of intuitive UX features and streamlined UI, employees are able to easily navigate through A to Z to manage their needs.

TRANSPARENCY

Amazon A to Z closes the loop for every interaction an employee has with the app. Whether it’s about the status of a time off request or a notification regarding their schedule, employees are in the know. Now they can manage their work-life balance with confidence and ease.
